In the introduction of the story Carver goes on to explain how, .
             "[Robert and her] talked. He asked her to send a tape and.
             tell to him about her life. She did this. She sent the tape. .
             On the tape, she told the blind man about her husband and .
             her life The blind man made a tape. He sent her the .
             tape. She made a tape. This went on for years" (154-55).
             Schwartz also explains this transaction among the two, although not nearly as thoroughly, but he instills it at a different point in the story. He does not bring it in during the introduction, as Carver does, thus leaving the viewer at a different emotional standpoint in comparison to the reader. The reader has a more specific understanding at the beginning of the story of the important relationship among the two characters. This creates a more sympathetic tone for the reader, something not included for the viewer from the video. Additionally, the sense of jealousy that Bub seems to hold about the relationship between the two characters is better explained because of the inclusion of the story in the introduction. It seems that Bub may have a personal problem with Robert, besides the fact of his blindness, but the video does not give justice to this problem as the short story does. Through the order of descriptions and explanations in the short story, the reader is easily able to understand the mood of the characters and the story. Because of the distortion and lack of these descriptions and explanations in the video, the mood is not as obvious to the viewer.
             Both the short story and the video explain the characters and their background, but it seems the video holds the tendency to leave out important character traits. This weakens the development of the characters. First of all, the character development of the wife is weak in the video. In the short story, Carver explains the wife's past life and her old marriage. Carver describes how "one night she got to feeling lonely and cut off from people she kept losing in that moving-around life.
