President's Power

 

            Does the President have too much power? This question is a highly debatable one. Some people believe that he has too much and others think not enough. I personally believe that the President has too much power today and the amount of power given to any one individual should carefully be monitored. .
             Many people including myself feel that the power the president has should be limited. The constitution clearly wants the power of the government to be divided up which means that the power should not be given solely to any one branch. The President has had the power to bomb and declare an unofficial war in the past (and today). The power to send military oversees should not lie solely in the hands of one man, but it should also go through Congress. Congress has given some of this power to the President and doing so they have lost the checks and balances system that we should have (Olson and Woll). It is almost scary that one person can decide that a war is going to happen (like Vietnam) or that he can decide how much privacy we will have. I especially feel that the President should not have absolute power when it comes to foreign affairs.
             However, in this time of crisis after September 11, many citizens and even congress feel that President Bush can have all the power he wants. They are happy that Bush is trying to increase [national] security and taking away some of their rights. I believe that while no one person should have complete power over a nation that it is necessary to give him the power to shut down the nations airports and ground all planes (as in 9/11). Some powers that are domestic the president should have but a majority of the responsibilities should be spread over the three parts of the government (Milbank). .
             This question is one of great importance to the United States; however, may people have differing opinions of how much power the President should have.
