Pollution

Cities that have volcanoes nearby have experienced volcanic activity and have noticed that when the ash is erupted, it may stay in the atmosphere for days upon days, due to the weather.
Los Angeles, California has long been known for its air pollution, and the actions it has done to try to control it. Los Angeles lies on the coast of the Pacific ocean, but mountains that restrict the circulation of air from the dessert surround it. Fog moving in from the ocean is normal to the city. Temperatures in the city are from layers of air. "A layer of warm air is on top of a layer of cooler air, and then this prevents the air near the ground from rising and then as a result, pollutants are trapped in the lower layer of air (Tesar 103).".
Pollution continues to increase as a result of the increasing number of motor vehicles on the roads. Exhaust fumes from the engines of automobiles contain a number of polluting substances. According to Taking A Stand Against Environmental Pollution by Newton, most of the substances that are harmful are: carbon monoxide and a variety of complex hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. When exposed to sunlight, these substances undergo a change in their composition. As a result the substances produce the brown, toxic, smog. The smog is something that Los Angles is well known for.
Los Angeles is not the most unique, or the worst example of polluted air. Milan, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires face similar problems. Although New York City produces greater quantities of pollutants than Los Angeles, it has been saved from an air-pollution disaster only because of its climate. Mountains, like Los Angeles, do not surround New York. Therefore, pollution can freely drift out to sea, and its not confined to the city.
             Water Pollution.
According to Forseman, water pollution is the release of substances that become dissolved or suspended in the water or are accumulated to the extent that they interfere with the function of aquatic organisms in lakes, streams, rivers, and oceans or any other aquatic biome.
