school violence

According to program officials, RCCP teaches students that they have many choices besides aggression for dealing with conflict, it gives them the skills to make real choices in their own lives, increases their understanding and appreciation of their own and others culture, and shows them they play a powerful role in creating a peaceful world.
Many people in charge of our schools still feel that it is unnecessary to have trained security and safety officers in our schools. Some students can be reached by the preceding suggestions, but some cannot. One school in New York, Martin Luther Jr. H.S is a ticking time bomb where violence rules, drugs are rampant, and students threaten other students who want to learn. Still many of these conditions go unanswered. One parent Sandra Stephens said, "we've brought issues to the administrators but the principal has swept them under the rug- principal Stephanie D"Amore told us that it was going to be taken care of and school officials are addressing the problem." This is not an answer that a school official should be saying to a parent. School officials should be encouraging more parents to get involved.
This violence does not only affect the students but the teachers as well. Between 1990-2000 there have been over 14,000 violent incidents against teachers. In this school alone in a one month period Two teachers reported being punched and kicked by students- including one that was kicked down the stairs. City -wide more than 3,000 were hurt badly enough to miss work-and most of the assaults were committed by the students. Board of Education spokeswoman Karen Crowe said letters raising concerns about MLK High School have been forwarded to the appropriate offices for investigation and follow-up. Last year MLK had 213 reported incidents- the highest number of any Manhattan high school. What are the school officials waiting for, the violence in the public schools are getting out of control, and in today's society we have to wait for a Columbine incident to happen before our elected officials take any kind of action.
