This beast stumbled into the horseshoe.
"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!-.
The blue white scar was constant, the noise unendurable. Simon was crying out something about a dead man on a hill. (152).
In this quote it shows that the boys act like savages when the fire is not lit. They end up killing one of the boys because they are not thinking and are acting like savages. Not working together and not getting things done are some of their problems when the fire is not lit. They fall apart and don't work together. .
Next, Golding uses the condition of the glasses to symbolize the condition of the boy's civilization. First, when the glasses are not broke the boys work together. As the boys work together, they get some things accomplished. For example, when the glasses are not broke, Ralph figures out what needs to be done in able to survive and has assemblies to get this things accomplished: "We have lots of assemblies. Everybody enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things- (Golding 79). Here, the glasses are not broken and the boys are acting civilized. They are all thinking logically and figure out what needs to be done in order to survive. They are acting as civil boys would. This shows that when the glasses are not broken they get along and decide on what needs to be done. The chores may not get completed, but they agree and work together.
The glasses represent the logical and reasoning of what needs to be done and accomplished. Secondly, as the glasses start to break, the boys start to slowly lose logic and reasoning which soon leads them into savagery. Also, they stop agreeing with each other and have many disagreements about how things should be done. As the glasses brake, all the boys, besides Piggy, start to loose all sense of civil life. They start to forget what to do and when to do it. Finally, they stop working together, and soon after, the tribe breaks apart and everything goes wrong from here.
