Sex And Gender

The topic that I have chosen for this final assignment is sex and gender. In the society that we live in, gender was and still is a big part of are society. Men and women are still not equal and haven't been for decades but it is slowly changing. It is significant to me how women have been treated in our society. Also, it interests me on how one can get certain privileges by being a certain sex. There is still a conflict on how women are treated and looked at as housewives, care takers, and the weaker sex. To women, television is a gender mirror that has failed to reflect their image accurately (Montgomery 14). Gender plays a huge part of what is supposed to be the man's responsibility and what is suppose to be the woman's role. As a traditional housewife, a woman is expected to keep the house clean and spotless all day, every day. In the past women have been expected to raise the children and keep up with all the household duties, as men make the money outside of the home. Furthermore at this time in history, women in the work force were inappropriate and looked down upon. With this restriction, it was the woman's job to be a housewife and caretaker. This restriction could be from of gender capitalizing women to do these things. Women assumed these responsibilities because of the demand of their husbands and the gender expectations our society has. Furthermore, women in those days were accustomed to obeying and being extremely submissive to their husbands, as well as not being given the freedom or choices to do what they wanted. These traditional roles of the husband being the breadwinner and the wife being a housewife are still seen today in traditional families across America. Although women in the past have been more obedient and dependent upon their husbands, their roles and lives are changing. Women are still portrayed in the media as housewives, care takers, and the weaker sex, but in reality large numbers of women are now in the work force, are independent, and have the same rights and capabilities as men.
