The writer of the editorial obviously showed the main points of its argument in its introduction, which, are diplomacy, financial controls, and military actions. Yet, the writer still elaborated the main points on each opening paragraph of its argument. For example, "Tracing funds used in terrorist acts should get high priority and when sources are found, host governments must be leaned on hard." This main point tells the reader that the writer will talk about financial controls of terrorism and that they must be controlled or extinguished to eliminate terrorism in whole. Main points are vital in an argument and by arranging the main points effectively readers can easily distinguish the writer's idea and avoids the readers pondering around the editorial for the writer's thoughts. .
Supporting points are the back bone of the writer's main idea; yet, they must have a sustaining relevancy and convincing facts and opinions. In the editorial the writer has supporting points that are facts, for example, "Pakistan has helped the U.S. before, finding and deporting the leader of the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993." This supporting point is relevant about diplomacy, which creates great evidence about it. Also, the writer gives out opinions about diplomacy, for instance, "Washington needs help from its allies, whose intelligence agencies may be more able to provide information." Opinions are also one way of making good supporting points and it also gives the writer's own point of view.
