Time

In this line time serves as someone or something that is leading the author in the right direction. From line to line we are not only exposed to new meanings of time, but building blocks for the rest of the song. We have moved from being stuck in transition to having this helpful thing called time leading us in the right direction on the path of life. Now that we are on the right path through time we must move on to find a new meaning of time and transition.
The third line of the song, "So make the best this test and don't ask why" (line3) is explaining to the reader that even though we may not be comfortable with this thing called time, we should follow its path because it will lead us in the right direction. Also, when transition occurs in life, not all questions will be answered, therefore, the author states "don't ask why"(3). Through time our questions will be answered by experience so the best thing to do is let time take its course. As we move through the song, it is quite obvious that this line foreshadows the last line of the verse. One line serves as the question and the next the answer. .
The last line of the first verse, " It's not a question but a lesson learned in life learned in life" (4) shows that this whole test, which is transition, just takes time to understand. As time goes on we will understand why each transition in our life occurred. In the end, life is a huge transition that is controlled by time. There will be no one thing in life that lasts too long because time will grab it and point it in a different direction. The previous sentence explains that the author of the song trusts time. He lets time control his life and has no plan for what life might bring in the future. After reading the first verse of the poem, I was able to conclude that we must enjoy the time we have now because soon enough time will point us in a new direction.
The next verse of the song, which is actually the refrain of the song, explains why we should enjoy the present and not focus on the future.
