As well as having a distinct purpose and peolple, organisations must have a deliberate structure. There are many different forms of structure organisations adopt, but one of the main reasons for having structure is so that the people have their part of the work to do in an attempt to accomplish the organisations purpose. Some structures may be open and flexible or more strict and traditional with defined rules and job descriptions( ). With the idea of structures emerges managers, who have a certain type of authority over other memebers of the organisation.
Management.
Managers work in orgainisations, and it is because of organisations that managers exist. If there were no organisations there would be no demand for managers. In regard to organisations, managers are 'Organisational members who oversee and direct the work of other members' ( ). Managers carry out management process' so that they are able to acompolish the organisations goal and as described above, to create a successful organisation.
What is Management? Robbins and Mukerji define managment as ' The process of getting activities completed efficiently with and through other people' (1994, p 8). Slightly different to Robbins and Mukerji, Van Fleet defines management as ' A set of activities directed at the effiecient and effective utilisation of resources in the pursuit of one or more goals' ( 1991, p 8).
