Lorraine looked away as the boy laughed randomly, and she assumed he was laughing at her. After she confronted him about the matter, I assume it seemed silly, and they both laughed and became friends.
John describes his mother, whom he calls his "Old Lady,"" as being a complete neat freak. Even the term "neat freak- is an understatement. From how he describes her, his mother seems to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He refers to his father as "Bore- due to the fact that he was not a very interesting man. The only thing his father was interested in was John becoming successful. John's older brother, Kenneth, was very successful and it was pointed out many times that he carried an attaché suitcase. John was not in the least bit concerned about being successful. .
One night, John, Lorraine and their friends Dennis and Norton were doing one of their usual prank-call sessions. This involved calling up a random person in the phone book and trying to keep the person on the phone for as long as absolutely possible. They each took their turns, and when it was Lorraine's turn the name she pointed to was Angelo Pignati. She pretended to be a representative of a false charity but was saddened by the man's sense of despair. Mr. Pignati was all too willing to chat with Lorraine-Miss Truman as she referred to herself-and wanted to donate ten dollars to the charity. After the conversation, John was all too excited to go to Mr. Pignati's house and collect their donation, even though Lorraine most definitely did not want to.
John and Lorraine arrived at Mr. Pignati's house the next day. Mr. Pignati seemed like such a nice old man, although he lived alone. He claimed his wife, Conchetta, was away in California visiting his sister. During this visit, they all chatted and Mr. Pignati was very hospitable. He wanted them to all go to the zoo so he could visit his baboon friend whose name was Bobo.
