Of Mice and Men

Most people have felt lonely in their life one time or another. John Steinbeck wrote a great story about loneliness called "Of Mice and Men". Loneliness can be hard on someone and this book gives many examples of people being lonely and how they deal with it. John Steinbeck portrays the theme of loneliness through the characters of Candy, Curley's wife, and Crook. .
Candy was a lonely character until the end of the book. In the beginning it seemed like he only had his dog and no friends. Towards the end it seemed like he started doing more things with the guys and he started to feel accepted because they were going to let him move on to the ranch with them. Before this though he was very lonely and all he would do is sit home and talk to his dog like it was the only thing he had. Candy said "A guy on a ranch don't never listen nor ask no questions." Candy also didn't feel appreciated and he felt like the he is no good to anyone. He said "You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn't no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht somebody's shoot me. But they won't do nothing like that. I won't have no place to go an"l can't get no more jobs." Candy probably wouldn't have felt this way if he opened up to the ranch members more and just talked to them. He never expected anyone to listen to him and I think if he did then they would and he wouldn't feel so lonely.
The next person in the novel that I didn't even think felt lonely until the end of the story when she said it to Lennie. Curley's wife said, "Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely." Throughout the story Curley's wife always want someone to talk to but no one would ever talk to her because they were afraid of Curley. She always wanted to talk to someone. The only person she could talk to was Curley but he was never around. She said, "Well, I ain't giving you no trouble.
