Zinsser's Essay

In Zinsser's essay on College Pressures, he analyzes the general feelings that college kids have when they first come to college and expect to know exactly what they"re going to be doing for the rest of their lives. He criticizes these beliefs and gives many reasons for his criticism and then begins to intertwine the "college pressures" and how they relate to everyone's lives. Zinsser tells of how college students get so stressed out with work that they don't truly get to enjoy the college experience, which only comes once in a lifetime. In this particular essay Zinsser uses a couple of students from Yale University and goes into explaining how that there are pressures already laid on them before they even begin class, such as the outrageous amounts of money that the parents of the student are paying for them to go to school. Naturally the student feels an obligation to make lots of money to pay back the twenty thousand dollars in loans that they need to receive an education, so the student is already in debt before he/she is even out in the work force. The same type of rule then applies for what major the student is going to pick, because they are going to need to make lots of money to satisfy their parents and the voice in the back of their head that tells them that money is a top priority in society.
Zinsser also gets into the added pressure that comes from students over-achieving, thus making other students feel that just doing the standard amount of work assigned just isn't enough anymore and that they too need to step it up a level. This concept in itself is not good for anyone because the pressure just keeps building up until every one of the students suffer in the class. Zinsser also makes a great statement in his essay about how the students are too young to be "prisoners of their parents" dreams and their classmates fears." Students seem to believe that there must me a detailed map showing them exactly what they will be doing for the rest of there life instead of enjoying the present all they do is live in anxiety.
