Lord Of the Flies

The novel Lord of the Flies begins with an introduction of characters and government. At the beginning of the story the government seems to have a democratic way of electing a leader. The group of surviving boys has a choice between Jack and Ralph. Jack already being the leader of the choir seems to be a power crazy and very bossy little boy. He has a critical attitude and finds imperfection in all the boys for example the crowd has already witnessed him making fun of Piggy on behalf of his weight. Ralph on the contrary is a natural leader making decisions based on the well being of the whole group. He is generally a nicer boy than Jack and is also older having more knowledge. The group then votes for Ralph to be leader and he sets out on his first journey to determine whether or not they are really on an island and if so whether or not it is inhabited. To do so he orders the boys to stay put and not wonder off creating an image of a dictator or totalitarian. Before Ralph's departure on his journey he chooses Jack and a kid named Simon out of the group to follow him. They will later become his right hand men and help him with decisions. They will make up the senate and create a government in the image of socialism. Therefore the government in the novel will change from the beginning to the end one step at a time. .
