The Thinner the Better

Ellen Goodman who writes a column in newspapers once wrote a column entitled "The Sexualizing Society" on girls and how they look at their body. She discusses many issues in her column on how girls judge themselves and the importance that girls place on looks and body image in our times. Through out the article, Goodman looks at the importance of girls and their looks from many different angles and tries to asess why girls do this and also what some of the consequences may be to girls putting such a strong emphasis on their looks alone. My life, like the girls Goodman talks about, has been focused around looks and the feelings that I have about my looks. My self-worth and many of my actions stem from the way that I and other people feel about my body.
When I feel skinny and beautiful I feel like I can do anything, however, when I feel ugly and fat I felt like there is nothing that I can do. Growing up in the twentieth century, I have learned that a girl is pretty when she is skinny. I am not skinny! They make many different beauty products to help people in all different areas of the body. On each and every model whether they are modeling clothes, makeup, aging cream, clothes or anything else the model is skinny and beautiful. Ellen Goodman hit it right on the spot when she said, "The beauty industry changed to make their customers feel worse." Therefore, I feel pretty and confident in myself when I have lost weight and I am on a diet. When I'm not on a diet, like many other "Teenage girls [ are constantly saying] 'I hate my body. I hate my looks. I hate myself.'" All I want is to be skinny and beautiful like everyone else seems to be, the perfect 6 not the perfect 10. .
My mom and Nana are my best friends and they say that they love me and think I am the prettiest girl, although they still criticize me for being overweight. I feel as though if they truly thought that I was pretty, then all of me would be pretty and not just my face or actions.
