Herland-Work Ethics

The women of Herland had a unique relationship to their work, one that is extremely different from work relationships in our present day and in the society from which the 3 visitors came. The Herlanders thought of work in terms of the entire Herland community. The women planted trees, fruits and cultivated the land in order to feed the entire community, not just the individuals. The narrator sites an example of this relationship to work and his community. "To them their country was a unit "it was theirs. They themselves were a unit, a conscious group; they thought in terms of the community."" In Herland, the women worked for the good of the whole.
In our present society, some of the working population understands the Herland work theory, but it is not widely practiced. Volunteering in the community is one example of present day Herland work theory. But unfortunately the majority of Americans work for their own prosperity, not for the good of the entire community.
All of the Herland women's work also related back to the children of the country. The number one and most honored job was to be a Mother. They perfected a "cultural environment for their children."" All of their roles after bearing children focused on providing for the children. "Children needed spinners and weavers, farmers and gardeners, carpenters and masons, as well as Mothers."" So these were the jobs of the Herland women. Their work took them all over the country to utilize the land to it's fullest potential. Unlike most employment today, these women couldn't live in one place because their work required them to be flexible and mobile. .

I think if Charlotte Gilman had added a woman to the party of visitors to Herland the story could have been even more interesting. I foresee a woman in this group of men having just as difficult a time adjusting as the men, but for different reasons. .
I think an all female society would be just as unbelievable to the woman as it was to the men.
