Higher Education


             Should Universities, which strive to provide some students with competence in a particular career be held responsible for today's morally deprived, and relativistic society? Today's universities have fallen under the eyes of many idealistic critics such as Allan Bloom who believe that university should strive to produce more than just doctors, scientists, and engineers. They believe that universities can and should pave the road to enlightenment. Although these high hope for universities are nice, the realities of the issue force one to quickly disagree with Bloom's ideals. The current state of our society cannot be cured by post secondary education, nor can post secondary education be blamed for the state of our soul depleted society. Education cannot be held responsible for instilling the ethics of humanity back into society. .
             For instance, students cannot afford to partake in a higher education for the purpose of anything but specified professionalism. It cannot be ignored that higher education favours those with wealthy deep pockets. Realistically, attaining a higher education is full of obstacles for students who are not so blessed with the funds. Many of these students lack the luxury of going to university with anything but a carrer in mind. Think how class oriented universities would be if they served the purpose of enlightenment. Teenagers will not take out a difficult unpayable loan to learn how to be a "better human being". Without the financial backing of a well-to-do family, higher education equals years of debt. Young adults lack the resources to partake in a university to feed the soul. Universities are simply contending with the needs of today's students and society. It is important for critics such as Bloom to jump from their condescending throne and realize that recreational knowledge could only be purchased by a selected group of well-heeled families.

             Besides, the aim of homes, not universities, should be to teach idealism and morality.
