The Function of Legend in

" I have in my coop a little black hen that gives me a lot of trouble. It never roosts with the others, seldom cackles, and wouldn't lay for all the wheat Old Man Pierriche harvests on Sunday. Sometimes I feel like bleeding her; there is something suspicious about it.".
Irving's story revolves around a post-Dutch community living in a little valley by the name of Sleepy Hollow (we could again point to the air of authenticity present in the narrative by observing the fact that the valley is very precisely geographically located). The place is described as "drowsy" and "dreamy" and it is stated that the "populations, manners, and customs, remained fixed, while the great torrent of emigration and improvement sweeps by them unobserved". As in his famous short story "Rip Van Winkle", Irving incorporates his conviction into the story that historical changes are not so sweeping as some people believe them to be. In this case, we encounter a community that sticks to old beliefs and superstitions very much. These beliefs are the heritage of the Puritan past of the country. As a matter of fact, this feature of the narrative is one of its most important aspects as I have already stated earlier on. In his work, Irving was trying to come to terms with the American past as well as to show the differences between the American and English societies. He proves himself not to be only far-attached from the Puritan concept of the world but also to ridicule it and illustrate its bad effects on the characters which is chiefly the case in the representation of Ichabod Crane's personality. .
The people are under the spell of this quiet place and therefore grow exceedingly imaginative in shaping legends and tales about its history. History is thus directly connected with legends and facts real and facts imagined merge and intermingle. Through the content of the stories as well as the way they are narrated it is shown that the people are still very much connected with their European descent.
