Of Mice and Men

            Of mice and Men by John Steinback, a story about the bond of two men, George Milton and Lennie Small who are joined together through their sense of dedication to each other. With each other they go through the plights of being traveling farm hands looking for work. Lennie who is a very tall and stocky man has a mind of a child and George who is the opposite is very small but very witty and intelligent. They both dream of one day having land that they can farm and to having animals and livestock. Together they receive work in a farm where they meet several other characters that live with the same loneliness and dream for a better life and therefore get seduced by Lennie and George's dream for success. Though their dream is never fulfilled when Lennie runs into trouble when he accidentally kills the wife of one of the other workers. He kills her unintentionally when her hair sparks Lennie's interest because of his love for soft things and when she mistook his actions and began to scream he began to shake her not knowing his own brutal strength he kills her. He is forced to hide out by the river where George told him to hide if something went wrong in the beginning of their trip. There is where George kills his friend to keep him from suffering and pain that will face him.
             Needless to say that this is a great book because of its popularity but it is well written. Though the end is no surprise in any way, the author manages to get sympathy for the characters all through the story. He doesn't make anyone to be bad character but instead makes us fell compassionate toward him or her.
             John Steinback covers a large scope in this book. The two main topics covered were the impossibility of the American dream and the loss of the weak to the strong. Their desire to own a farm but is never fulfilled, and the dream of Curly's wife of being a movie star that never came true is proof of the how difficult it is to achieve the dream.
