The Necklace


            
             Everybody wants to be adored by others or better yet, to be envived by .
             others and desiring for the luxuries makes a person unhappy. In "The Necklace", Maupassant describes a woman who makes herself unhappy. Mathilde is unadmirable character. First, she does not appreciate what she has; also, she is self centered; and, finally she becomes the author of her own destruction.
             To begin with, Mathalide does not appreciate what she has. She expects more than .
             she has, even though she has everything that any middle class woman can ask for. "She [is] as .
             unhappy as if she [has] gone through bankruptcy, for women have neither rank her race." (Pg. .
             11) She lives for her unrealistic dreams, which are "expensive banquets and "silent anterooms".
             Dreaming of expensive surroundings makes her more frustrated because she can not act like her .
             rich friend. She just want to show her friends that she is so rich and happy, even though she is .
             happy right now with what she has but she can not see all those happiness. However, she has .
             not adjusted to her status, even the picture is clear to her of belonging to middle class. Her .
             husband is a clerk and he can not afford all her expensive dreams. Instead of encouraging him .
             or telling him that she is happy with him, she complains about the everything all the time, not having a high soceity living style. When he tells her that they are invited to the ball and how hard it is to get that invitation, she refuses to go because she does not have a fancy dress. She does not understand her husband's feelings and desires. How much he cares about her. It seems that relationship does not matter to her. She lives for herself.
             After the invitation incident he tries to fulfill her dreams. Rather than conforting him or realizing him that how great husband he is, she makes an other excuse not having a nice necklace. She is so selfish always thinks about herself. Finally she borrows a necklace from her friend and start dreaming about the ball.
