1960

The music of Bob Dylan and Jimmie Hendrix captivated many people. People found that they could relate to their music and they were influenced to write songs and learn to play the guitar. Hippies, in their rebellious stage, looked at their music as "stories that teach lessons that no school could ever teach" (Puz). Rock "n roll music was also revolutionized in the 1960's. The Beatles changed rock "n roll and created pop music as they quickly became the trendsetters of America. The Beatles were the most popular and influential rock act of all time. They helped to reshape Rock "n roll into "Rock music" that was capable of introducing serious social issues into the mainstream of American culture, thus, becoming "Pop music" and not just mere commercial entertainment (Holland 46). Not only did they revolutionize Rock music, but they had lasting effects on the American culture as well and inspired many artists at the time. Like Dylan, they encouraged people to get involved with music. With the rapid changes in music came changes in fashion. The Beatles, in particular, introduced, "Beatle haircut" and so began the fashion of long hair that transcended through the 1970's (Puz). Other music brought upon the hippie culture and fashion such as bellbottoms, miniskirts, and many floral designs. Beatles, Dylan, and many other musicians of the time portrayed the attitude: "Be yourself, don't let anybody tell you how to run your life". .
There were various major events throughout the decade that deeply influenced attitudes of younger adults. In the middle of the decade, America became vastly a country of turmoil as the country split between pro-war and anti-war activists. The Vietnam War was a very controversial war, and when the draft was accelerated and anti-war sentiment grew, college students organized anti-war protests. As the war dragged on and body counts grew, people began to get irritated and protest expanded.
