The Distinctive Direction of David Fincher

David Fincher is a director with a distinctive film style that he has made his own. With very little titles under his belt, Fincher is effortlessly one of the most talked-about directors to emerge from the 90's. Some of his most arguably popular movies and the ones that I will be going into are Fight Club, Se7en, Panic Room, and the Social Network. As a fan of David Fincher I found that while doing research most of the people talking about and analyzing his films were also fans. In fact they were super fans; his cult-like' status on the Internet is profound. Fincher has the ability to captivate audiences all over the world.
             .
Fincher was inspired by the work of George Lucas and landed his first major industry job at the age of 18 at Industrial Lights and Magic, which was owned by Lucas. After that he did music videos and documentaries for well-known artists such as Aerosmith, Paula Abdul and Madonna. Fincher was also inspired and a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock and said that one of his favorite movies is Rear Window. It is clear in his work that Fincher is influenced a lot by Hitchcock's pans, tracking shots, and styling. The movie Panic Room acts like a Hitchcock thriller from beginning to end. But overall Fincher's work has a signature dark and grim style that is his own. Fincher's first feature length film was Alien in 1992. He now has Se7en (1995), The Game (1997), Fight Club (1999), Panic Room (2002), Zodiac (2007), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), The Social Network (2010), and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). .
Fincher has been said that he doesn't actually believe himself to be an auteur, but non-the-less he does always include certain idioms into his work. One of Fincher's main similarities is his use of camera work rather than narrative to impress the audience. It is clear in his work, especially in Fight Club, that he is a talented camera artist. Fincher also has a post modernistic style for example his work often features rejection of society, dark worlds with dark people, dark issues and dark humor.
