Someone Very Special in My Life

I could not believe this stranger was worried about me. It was a strange feeling for me. How could some one have any interest in me? I was scared because I was afraid that Miss Jimenez would to talk to my grandmother and I then I would be punished. My teacher did not ask me more questions; instead she put her arms around me and hugged me with tenderness like a mother giving comfort to her daughter. That was my first experience of love. Miss Jimenez said to me, "You do not have to tell me anything but if you need somebody to talk to I will be here for you anytime.".
Days passed by but I did not have the courage to talk to her. Deep in my heart I wished she would ask me to talk to her again. It was a Monday when I arrived at school with a bruised face. I felt embarrassed because everybody was looking at my face and were asking me questions. They wanted to know why my face was beaten that way. When Miss Jimenez saw me she was very concerned. That day I told her all about the history of my short nine years of life and all about the verbal and physical abuse from my grandmother I had endured since my father left the country.
Miss Jimenez thought the best way to resolve this situation was for me to write a letter to my father. I wrote this letter with Ms. Jimenez's help; it was my first letter to him. I asked my father to take us with him because we missed him and we needed him very much. I didn't tell him anything about how his mother treated my sister and me. I also wrote about my teacher to let him know that she was a very special teacher and she was helping us. The answer was positive. My father started the process with immigration; he wanted us to wait until the end of the school year. He came to take us to the United States but we did not obtain permission to leave Colombia because we needed my mother's signature. Neither my father nor my grandmother knew where my mother was living.
Miss Jimenez suggested placing us in a boarding school.
