Improving the Welfare System

When this happened, we needed to set new standards in order for people to collect welfare benefits. .
I believe that today, we should start the welfare process by drug testing all applicants. Lawmakers in at least 28 states have proposed drug testing (or screening) for all public assistance applicants and recipients. It shouldn't stop there. Every year, welfare recipients should be subject to random drug screening. Second, there should be better background investigations of all applicants. Hard working tax payers deserve these precautions to be implemented. "Easy" welfare distribution is playing a large role in the financial destruction of America. .
Those who receive welfare checks and are "having a hard time" often seem to have enough money for beer, cigarettes, top-notch cable, video game systems and games, flat screen TV's, or nights out at the bar. What they don't have enough money for is food, heat, rent, and other necessary bills. They then ride on the backs of taxpayers who might have to go without perks because their paychecks are tapped into to uphold the welfare system. .
If people want the help of the government, perhaps they should do something to earn it such as cleaning public restrooms or other menial but important tasks. This would allow welfare recipients to "repay" the taxpayers and those who pay their taxes may not feel so taken advantage of. A welfare recipient with a drug offence or a felony should be disqualified from receiving government assistance. Stores that sell alcohol and tobacco shouldn't be able to accept welfare dollars.
In Michigan, state officials devised new rules regarding truancy and collecting welfare. If a child is truant (missing more than ten days of school), a family's welfare benefits are cut off. The Michigan Department of Human Services is keeping tabs on children ages 6 to 15 and expect them to attend school consistently. The state is threatening to take away state aid, thus holding parents more responsible for making sure that their children receive a good education.
