American History X and Cultural Criminology

.
The process of theorizing is very important because it forces one to look beyond theories that are already published, and make use to them to craft a deeper analysis. Being able to use societal issues, and relate them to one another can be seen as a use of the sociological imagination. One needs to be reflexive, critical, and self aware of their processes. It is being able to think perilously about different aspects, institutions, causes, and faces of society and social human beings in order to try to come to grips with what the interconnectedness is and what is contributing to behavior. "This practice goes well beyond consumption of content toward gaining an appreciation and deeper understanding of the generating and operating of theoretical concepts and implications of selecting and operating some theories over others"" (Frauley, 2011: 4). Understanding the complexity of society in terms of all the institutions, contexts, and interpretations and how all these are related is an important milestone in the study of criminology; to further study in criminology one needs to accept the fact that everything in society is related to the criminological field. .
"The sociological imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals"" (Mills, 1959: 5). Mills' explains that this sociological imagination helps him to take into account how people often become falsely conscious of their social positions. People tend to disregard this facet of criminological issues and solely focus in on definite theories to define their behaviors. It is when one realizes that personal troubles are of direct relation to larger societal issues that one can make assumptions about behaviors. The sociological imagination helps us realize how history, biography, biology, and the relationships between these all work together.
