Mexican American War - Research Paper

There was hatred and hostility from the Americans towards Mexicans, especially towards Mexican officials. Americans despised receiving orders from Mexican officials so they displayed their anger with acts of discrimination and violence (Mexican-American War (Causes)). When Mexico ended slavery in 1829 (Smithsonian Education), it infuriated Americans to the point where they decided to revolt and declare Texas a "free country ". America has always been involved with morally wrong actions such as slavery, corrupt politics and Indian killings, most of these to gain more land. Even though these atrocities are impardonable, America's mentality of "manifest destiny " ( the idea that the United States is destined by fate and god to expand from coast to coast) "justified " all the actions taken by the United States to gain land. (Mexican-American War (Causes)). As history can clearly tell, America will not hesitate to shed blood in order to expand and become more powerful. The texas revolution followed and its battles caused many deaths on both sides. The most famous one being the battle of the Alamo. After the Texas revolution and the battle of the Alamo Americans were enraged and wanted revenge. President Polk saw this as a perfect opportunity to try and acquire Texas. Even though the conflict between Mexico and the United Stated completely breached George Washington's injunction to avoid entanglements with foreign nations, America was too power-hungry to refuse. Polk invoked a dubious plan to invade a neighboring country and deceived a country into going to war with another (Lillegard ).
One of the main causes of the Mexican-American War was Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny is the belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. In the United States of America, the decade of the 1830s witnessed the continuation of America's westward expansion.
