Religion - Purpose and Function

At first, these battles were more for fun than for anything else, but as time passed, the battles turned into full-scale wars. Both Confucianism and Taoism were created to help China return to its previous glory. Although Taoism has no founder, historians assume that Loa Tzu, said by the Tao to be the 'creator' of this religion, was a real person and wrote the Tao-te Ching. This book is the basis for all Tao beliefs. Inaction is respected by the Tao, but not in the traditional sense. The word inaction is typically linked to laziness and procrastination, but to the Tao, this means following the way with nature and not trying to change the worlds natural cycle. This religion was a way for the Chinese people to accept and comprehend what was going on around them, and to help them to return China to its former glory. .
The creation story of Islam states that the events written in the Qur'an took place after those of Judaism and Christianity. This religion was founded in Saudi Arabia, where, at the time, the social structure was built off of clans. Being part of a clan was a way to be part of a community, and a way to be protected form their enemy's. Clan membership guarantied support in the case of murder. This act became very typical in clan society, and the rule of thumb was an eye for an eye. Occasionally, so many people would die that the clans would go to a third party. The two clans would then delegate, and who ever was chosen would then determine whatever punishment they saw fit. Being chosen as a mediator was a large honour, and one of the most trusted men to do so was Muhammad. But once he had received the Qur'an, though he had always been a spiritual person, he stepped away from the clan system, and believed that religion was more important than your clan membership. It is evident that people converted to Islam to deal with, and stop the constant murders being committed between clans.
