Debate.org is comprised of people's opinions where they can post anonymously from all over the country on different issues such as this. One posting said "students should understand that not taking proper care of their body can and will result in an unhealthy life and life style that could follow them for the rest of their lives". And that is very true considering being overweight or obese can lead to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and so many other diseases. Another person posted "Extensive research has shown over and over again that physical activity is beneficial not only for physical health, but also mental health such as social anxiety, and stress relief". Those are only some of the ways that physical activity can help you mentally. I mentioned previously that it can improve self-esteem, mood, and academic performance.
Many other people feel that gym and wellness classes such as physical education and health are inadequate so they should not be made mandatory.[The14][The07][Tuc10] Almost all educators (98%) said their schools offer PE, but 43% of educators and 32% of parents said PE at their schools is inadequate. "Physical education is not structured and not enough time is put into the importance and understanding that adequate exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. The earlier this message is instilled, the more likely they will remain active and healthy later in life. Too much emphasis is put on academics, even though . many studies [show that] adequate exercise and health play a very important role in academics.".
There are a variety of other reasons why parents don't feel like a PE class should be required for certain people. First thing would be student-athletes. Some parents don't believe they should be required to take it for one obvious reason: they already get more than enough daily physical activity. Others argue saying that if student-athletes don't have to take it, it becomes a punishment.
