The name of the places like "Millcote" and "Morton" in Jane Eyre are seen which resemble lots of places in 19th century north-central England. Jane never even go to London, an original English city. Jane announces that " I never seen city". Most of the names of places we get in this novel such as Gateshead Hall, Thornfield Hall, Moor house and Lowoodi institute remark the rural name. There were birds, hills, green field, woody fields and valley in setting. The atmoosphare of the whole novel was almost gloomy and dark which become extinct through the symbol of winter, fire and ice. After all, we can say that the novel has a pastoral setting. On the contrary, the movie Charulata took place in urban area. The setting is also an upper class thought of Bengali poets, journalists, politics, at the time of 1870 when India was still under British rule and issues of freedom and self determination are very passionate concern. Using of printing papers, newspaper, hawkers, playing cards are the evidence of city life of this movie. .
The plot of both Charulata and jane Eyre centers around the roles and struggle of female characters and their contemporary society. Both of the two have cohesive sub-plot. The conflicts in Jane Eyre are quarrel between Jane and John Reed, sent for Lowood school, broken of weeding ceremony with Rochester and run away from Thornfield hall of jane. On the other hand, charu's desire for sexual relation with Amal, Umapada's hypocrisy and Amal's leaving home are the main conflict in Charulata. In Jane Eyre all the characters are not introduced at the same time. We are introduced with Rochester, River, Fairfax, Bertha and Adele quite later of the beginning. But we are introduced with all of the characters of Charulata at the very beginning of the movie. When Jane is sent at Lowood school, the action is raised. When River proposes to marry with Jane, the action is complex.
