John Alberto Leguizamo was born in Bogotá, Colombia, to Alberto and Luz Leguizamo on July 22, 1964 and is an American actor, voice actor, producer and screenwriter. He started out as a stand-up comic doing the New York nightclub circuit. In 1984, he made his television debut with a small part in Miami Vice. He is married to Justine, and they have two children, daughter Allegra Sky and son Ryder Lee, they live in Manhattan. In 2008, Leguizamo received the Rita Moreno HOLA Award for Excellence from the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA). He was also a recipient of the 2011 Made in NY Award from the City of New York. Freak is a 1998 film directed by Spike Lee. The film is a live performance of John Leguizamo's one man show of the same name. Freak was semi-autobiographical as he would talk about many aspects of his life. In the routine, he also talks about family members such as his parents, grandparents, uncle, and his younger brother.
Besides family abuse, I believe that the main theme of Freak is acceptance. Leguizamo just wanted what almost every boy wants and that's to be seen as a man from their father. As a young boy he tried to please his father and looked up to his father as his hero. Even though his father abuses him and his little brother and even his mother he still wants him to accept him as a man and wants him to show him love. He wants to please his father so much that when he pushes John to push his morals aside to have sex with a strange, older woman he just goes along with it. John doesn't want to get involved with her, but he does not want to dissatisfy his father and leaving that KFC without losing his virginity, to his father, means not being a man.
John changes up his voice to match whatever character he is portraying. His voice becomes high when he is portraying a women or children. When he is portraying his father his voice gets deep.
