The Great Gatsby



             Tom and Daisy's relationship changes in various ways throughout the novel. Some of .
             these changes are beneficial but some changes end up hurting other people. The person who is most affected by Tom and Daisy's improving relationship is Gatsby. For example, Nick realizes Gatsby has no chance with Daisy anymore when he looks in the window and sees, "Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other.they weren't happy.and yet they weren't unhappy either.there was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy"(152). There is something unique about Tom and Daisy's relationship, they fulfill a need within each other that Gatsby can never replace. At the beginning of the novel this "intimacy" seems to be concealed but towards the end of the book it is once again revealed, and from that point Gatsby is out of the picture. When Daisy and Gatsby's relationship is acknowledged by Tom, he realizes that he must act fast or he is going to loose Daisy. He announces, "Of course it matters, I'm going to take better care of you from now on'(140). By saying this Tom assists Daisy in making her realize that he still cares for her and she in turn still needs him. His statement brings back memories of the love they used to feel for each other and she longs to be in love with him again. While it is wonderful that Daisy and Tom have started to rekindled their lost love, Gatsby has no such hope for a future with Daisy. Gatsby's dream of one day being loved by Daisy again, are shattered and he is left to pick up the pieces. .
             The relationship between Tom and Daisy causes many people to wonder what they have in common. They are two highly different people but they do share some common ground. According to Nick, "They were careless people.they smashed up things and creatures"(187). Tom and Daisy are united by their carelessness and their tendency to use people. They have similar personalities in that they are selfish and use people to get personal gain.
