Women's Roles in the Church

Therefore, women were already a part of the Church even before it was found and were "witnesses and followers " (Kroeger, Ward, 2012, 2011) of Jesus during his time. According to Tckah, these women were either "wives " (Tckah, 2005, para. 9) of the apostles or "followers " (Tckah, 2005, para. 9) of Jesus. This examines the life of women before the Church and Christianity developed. .
By the 3rd and 4th century A.D, women were spread out throughout different parts of the world dedicated to serve and help people. According to Cameron (1993), Egypt was the home of many female ascetics such as nuns "dedicated to the religious life " (Cameron, Puttick and Clarke, 1993, p. 11) and living for the purpose of serving other people. Also, it was claimed that the women, were often taken for granted by churches and or anyone who was superior to them. It was during this period of time where the hierarchy of the church started to develop to what is now known as: having a bishop on the top, priests and then deacons. The duties and responsibilities that the hierarchy did not want to deal with were often passed down to the nuns and other female deacons. Therefore, situations like these "created the need for women to serve as deacons " (Clarke, 2012, para. 6). .
Historians and theologians believed that women had more duties and responsibilities during the Middle Ages compared to how women were during the Renaissance Period. .
Councils and church gatherings during the Middle Ages were very strict and difficult because of the individual differences men and women have. As it is said from the Bible, "in Christ, there may be neither male nor female " (Bible, Galatians 3:28), but according to Irwin (1979), there have always been discrepancies "based on sex " (Irwin, 1979, p.
