There can be many reasons as to why one commits a crime and what goes through the heads of these offenders but there will never be a defiant answer as to exactly what goes on. In 2009 2.3 million people were incarcerated in the United States this including federal and state prisons and local jails creating an incarceration rate of 793. In 2011 1.6 million people were incarcerated under federal and state authorities by the end of 2011 another 492 people were in prison. Among people sentenced 725,000 people were incarcerated for violent crimes, 250,000 were Incarcerated for property crime. The U.S homicide rate that has decreased since 1992 is still the highest in the industrialized world. There were 14,748 homicides in the United States in 2010 including non negligent- manslaughter, 666,160 murders were recorded from 1960-1996.
Crime rates very in the United States depending on the type of community in the metropolitan areas both violent and property crime were higher then most cities, places located outside of a metropolitan area had a lower violent crime rate but property crime was higher. FBI divides crime into four regions so they can be compared Northeast, Midwest, South and West.
