Relationships are created and maintained through everyday talk and interaction. The increased availability that texting provides allows couples to form a sense of connectedness with each other. In their article on mobile communications and romantic relationships, Borae Jin and Jorge F. Pena point out that, "Given that more frequent interactions are crucial for romantic partners to experience a sense of connectedness and interdependence, it is reasonable to expect that partners interacting more through mobile phones should have more love and commitment toward each other" (qtd. ln Jin and Pena). The more couples text, the more connected they will feel and the more dependent they will become on each other. This mutual dependence will increase relationship satisfaction because each person will feel higher levels of love and commitment to the other. .
The ability to talk throughout the day is especially important when couples cannot see each other in person, or if they are part of a long distance relationship. In her journal, Dr. Lori Cluff Schade suggests that young people in search of a partner "can find partners independent of a geographic region and maintain long-distance relationships as well as instantly share videos, music, photos, and other links, which can enhance the development of intimacy and the progression of a relationship" (qtd. ln Schade et al). Texting has allowed couples the ability to keep up with one another throughout the day, which is especially helpful in progressing long distance relationships and keeping intimacy alive. For college students and young adults, long distance relationships can be hard to maintain, especially being surrounded by thousands of other young adults at all times. However, the ability to send and receive videos, music, photos and other links allow young couples to stay more in touch with one another's lives because they can physically see and hear what is going on in their partner's life.
