The Red and the White by Andrew Graybill

On January 23rd of 1870, Horace kill his mother's people along side other white Americans. The Marias Massacre led to the death of hundreds of Piegan people (Greybill 147). Greybill continues to write about his Daughter Helen and the life of His grandchild, John. Helen's story revolves around her life and her struggle of finding success with her mixed blood origin. She successfully becomes a superintendent of a Lewis and Clarke school District, and becomes one of the first women to achieve an elected position (Greybill 164). She is then appointed in an U.S. Indian Service later on in her life (Greybill 189). .
As for John Clarke, the grandson of Malcolm Clarke, Greybill writes about his life that basically parallel to his aunt Helen. When struck with scarlet fever, John lost his hearing at a young age (Greybill 199), and due to his disability he need to go to a specialized school for the deaf, he attended the 'Montana Deaf and Dumb Asylum' (Greybill 206). While attending school there he discovered the love for wood crafting and carving (Greybill 207). John eventually made a living with his woodwork (Greybill 218, 220) and his daughter Joyce still keeps her father's work alive today in Missouri (Greybill 239). This historical novel captures the rich history of the Clarke family. It opened up reader's minds on exactly how people of mixed families were looked upon and mistreated. Greybill wrote a successful novel overall and as for the reader (myself), I believe Greybill helped uncover many questions about the Clarke family by including the stories of Malcolm Clarke, his children, grandchildren and even his great grandchildren. This novel always seemed to always answer the question of "What happened?" Most of all Greybill captures each event with upmost emotion, and creates an almost cinematic experience for the reader to enjoy. .
Greybill's novel showed great flow of events.
