Shorting the Stocks of Retail Banks

             Short selling is the selling of a security that the seller does not own, or any sale that is completed by the delivery of a security borrowed by the seller. Short sellers assume that they will be able to buy the stock at a lower amount than the price at which they sold short (Short Selling)1. An investor may short a stock due to speculation or to hedge, that is, to reduce their risk of market fluctuations. If the price of the stock does drop, then the investor who shorted the stock makes money. Conversely, if the price goes up, then they owe money to the original owner of the stock. .
             In September of 2008, deciding that investors would take advantage of the financial turmoil taking place, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) instituted a temporary ban on the shorting of 799 financial stocks (SEC Halts Short Selling)2. That ban has since been lifted but the feeling that led to its creation still seems to persist, and with good cause.
