History of Germany: 1918-1939

This lead to the occupation of the Ruhr Valley in 1922, leaving the German people in a complete awe as to how this new government was in any way going to restore Germany to its former self. In turn, hyperinflation was at its pinnacle during 1923, leading the country into an overwhelming economical state where the Mark was now 4 billion times more expensive than it was 10 years earlier. The German people were now looking towards Gustav Stresemann, one of the more able politicians that Germany had experienced as a leader in some time, and he began to restore order in Germany by ultimately creating a new currency - the Rentenmark. Historian Josh Brooman states, that while "In the long run these measures saved Germany from complete collapse the immediate effect was to cause civil unrest and trigger another putsch" .
The people of Germany were beginning to become enraged with the state of their leadership, disappointed with the choices their democracy was making, and the instability of the overall system. This was forcing them to look towards other political leaders who were trying to make a positive change throughout and to reinstate a sense of pride and faith in the country again. Germany, being a very nationalist and proud country, was in search of someone who would be able to essentially get the country back onto its feet, and build its strength up again to the point that it had before 1914. Conveniently providing this at the time was Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party. .
Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP were essentially carried to complete power through their ideology and the promises they were offering to the German public, at a time when the people were desperate for someone who knew what they needed as a nation. Hitler managed to effectively portray his ideas and mindsets to the people of Germany through a way that they had barely seen before – the use of extreme propaganda.
