Teenagers in The Fault in Our Stars

Throughout the novel Hazel, Augustus and Isaac are told they are strong, noble and heroic for fighting for survival. Yet, there is nothing particularly heroic about Hazel not being able to breathe properly and knowing her death will hurt others, nor is there anything nothing noble about Augustus having his leg amputated or Isaac losing his vision. These three characters face the reality that they are not heroic or noble and are being told so due to cliches used by society to deal with the uncomfortable reality that they might die. During the novel the protagonists have to come to terms with the fact they have to make do with all the side effects of them dying and try to live their short lives as best as they can. For example when Augustus's Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) comes back and he doesn't peruse treatment so he can travel to Amsterdam with Hazel and have the time of his life. Due to this decision Hazel witnesses the reality of Augustus illness when he gets sicker after the trip; this makes Hazel realizes that cancer doesn't make him strong or heroic but, makes him weaker. When Hazel sees the reality of Augustus illness and the reality that he is going to die she explains that Augustus was no longer strong but in fact weak and he was no longer himself- "Augustus waters of crooked smiles and un-smoked cigarettes were gone, replaced by this desperate humiliated creature sitting there beneath me." Hazel then reflects on how cancer kids act according to society, and how they are supposed to maintain hope to the end. Although cancer kids are supposed to stay strong in reality Augustus was suffering, scared and pitiful. Throughout the novel Hazel, Augustus and Isaac all suffer and struggle to accept the reality of their illnesses and the controversies they face due to being sick.
The protagonists within the novel 'The Fault In Our Stars' face the daily concerns of dying and the burdens they will leave behind when they die.
