Climate Change and the Canadian Government

When people think about Canadians, they usually think of polite, kind and caring people. Although our environmental impact states otherwise. There is so much land in Canada that sometimes people forget that the whole country doesn't ride there moose to work or freeze in their igloo. In my opinion, climate change and environmental damage should be an increased priority for the Canadian government. Canada's climate is beginning to change, Canada is one of the world's leading pollutants per capita and the citizens of Canada are being directly affected and having to adjust their lives.
Canada's climate is beginning to change. The temperature is rising, the Arctic Circle is melting and there is an obvious need for change. Obviously Canada isn't the only country that has its temperature rising, but it is a continuously growing concern here in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, 2006 marked the 30th consecutive year in which there were warming than average temperatures. This streak is an awful achievement and should help awareness, but it has not. .
According to the Globe and Mail, over the past sixty-five years the temperature has risen specifically in the winter, all the way up to an average of 3.2 degrees. A huge problem that is starting because of the temperature increasing is Rain, snow, sleet and hail storms are becoming more erratic. What was once considered exceptional weather patterns, are now becoming more and more common. Robert Tremblay, research director of the Insurance Bureau of Canada stated that the storms that used to appear every fifty years are now appearing anywhere from five to ten years. Another huge issue in Canada is the melting of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle makes up roughly 40 % of Canada. Glacier monitoring conducted by the federal government in Canada's High Arctic shows the shrinking of the ice caps that started in the late 1980s "has accelerated rapidly since 2005" and is part of a "strongly negative trend," according to internal government documents.
