Amir and The Kite Runner

Amir displaces his guilt and confusion on Hassan for being Hazara. Amir's cowardice reaction also stems from the social injustice and prejudice in his homeland. Amir is born into the top of the social hierarchy while Hassan the bottom, the class structure and difference are apparent in how they dress, look, act and the type of work they do. After Amir denies Hassan their friendship, he begins to ponder on what Assef said, Amir thinks to himself, "But if so, then why, when Baba's friends came to visit with their kids, didn't I ever include Hassan in our games? Why did I play with Hassan only when no one else was around? (41). The thoughts that provoke Amir come from his unconscious mind, he realizes that there are actions he commits without understanding why, this connects the psychoanalytical theory and the Marxists theory. Amir is confused because he grew up with Hassan, learning they are equals when society shows otherwise. Afghanistan is an embodiment of a Marxist society the Pashtun's are the bourgeoisie and the Hazaras the proletariats. Amir had involuntarily inherited the oppression of his people, either you oppress or you become oppressed. The super structure is clearly demonstrated within the novel, Amir has aspirations of going to school and earning money, while Hassan sees his future as a servant in the house of Baba. Although Amir and Baba love Ali and Hassan, the social hierarchy disallows them to publicly express that. This incident with Assef foreshadows coming events within the near future as right before Assef leaves he says, "this isn't the end for you either, Amir" (43). Later in the novel Assef fulfills his promise. Assef instills a fear within Amir which disallows him to take a stand and defend himself throughout the novel.
Freudian analysis confirms that Humans are driven by desires and fears; Although both Amir and Hassan are fearful, Hassan's strength prevails while Amir yet again shows weakness.
