This occurrence is less about the miracle itself, but more about the meaning behind the transformation. A typical scorpion on the wall was changed into what many view as something precious and valuable. For one, the scorpion symbolizes represents hope. Even in the most dire situations, as was Jeromo and even more, the Peruvian people, Gomez shows that one should always have faith and be optimistic. Jeromo suffered through financial struggles, but the transformation of the scorpion shows that state is only temporary. One may suffer through troubling times, but the scorpion demonstrates that with faith, the journey can lead to a brighter and more beautiful future. Eventually, the peddler's business did thrive several months. Thus, it mimicked the transformation of the scorpion. A business that was once failing ultimately prospered.
The scorpion also represents the importance of faith in people. Just as Fray Gomez had enough faith to transform a scorpion into a Jewel, Jeromo had faith in Gomez's goodness. Knowing Gomez was short in finances, Jeromo requested assistance from him believing in his good character. In the story Jeromo states:.
"The World is full of folks Who reverence certain saints, .
But whose gratitude ends .
When they've answered their plaints.".
Gomez gave him the precious scorpion brooch in exchange for money and with that it was confirmed that he was truly genuine (Palma 88). Out of all his options, Jeromo chose to ask the man with the least amount of money because he believed that Gomez's compassion was real.
