Leadership and Communication Theories

They also apply these skills in problem solving. Due to these capabilities a person is able to emerge as a leader and be a successful leader, also maintain their position as a leader. Also other attributes that a leader might possess are motivation and social skills. All the above personal traits and attributes can only come in to effectiveness through proper communication, which is essential for one to be a leader. A communication type that would align with trait theory is a democratic style. A democratic style leader engages in supportive communication and assumes that followers are capable of making informed decisions. This approach doesn't guarantee a good leader but increases the odds that the leader will be effective and remain in the leadership position. This style of communication resonates with the trait leadership because it highlights the leader's attributes and according to the theory that if the leader possesses social intelligence and high cognitive abilities he/she will be able to determine that this style of communication will enhance their effectiveness as a leader. .
             B) Situational Leadership (Fiedler).
Situational Leadership argues that a leader's traits, skills, and behaviors may vary from situation to situation, in order for an effective leadership (Hackman, 2013, pg. 72). Since in this type of leadership each situation calls from different type of traits, it also calls for different type of communication depending on each situation. A leadership situation can be a religious congregation to a wartime situation. Each situation calls for a specific type of leader, so for example a football coach might be effective on a field, but he might not be an effective as a general or president. Each situation calls for a leader with specific strengths and specific traits. So depending on a situation a different leader might emerge that might not posses the traits required to be a leader in an opposite situation, which is contrary to trait leadership.
