Natural and Performance Enhanced Training

The growth of children is a process that involves many different hormones other than testosterone. The assumption that using testosterone alone based off of the effects of all hormones in puberty would be misguided seeing as testosterone is not the only chemical use for muscle mass progression. The use of anabolic steroids can be beneficial for people with unhealthy condition such as hypogonadalism. Hypogonadalism is a condition in which the sex glands of a person do not produce hormones (1290). Wu also stated that hypogonadal patients exhibited undoubted anabolic and ergogenic effects from anabolic steroid treatment (1290). It is important that it is reinforced to children that steroids are useful as medicine, but should only be used by a professional with proper knowledge about the substance. Although steroids have beneficial effects on somebody in need of testosterone, it should not be assumed that it will have the same benefits for somebody who is perfectly healthy.
In the past five decades the image of a perfect body has changed. Males and Females are exposed to multiple images of models and physiques that are rewarded based on their looks. From early ages children are also exposed to impossible physiques. For example, if one were to venture into an average male child's bedroom it is likely you would at some point run into a G.I. Joe exhibiting massive muscles and a tight waist. If one was to have entered a female child's room they could have found multiple Barbie dolls with extraordinarily tight waist and profoundly large hips. Cartoons and movies that children watch often show cartoon figures with large and muscular bodies and tight waist. The National Eating Disorder Association states on its website that, "numerous correlational and experimental studies have linked exposure to the thin ideal in mass media to body dissatisfaction" ("Media, body" 1). Watching these shows can alter how a child believes a body should look and could lead them to an unhealthy body image later in life.
