Walt was married to Marcia when had children with Billie, Christopher's mom. Meaning that Christopher and Carrie were both bastards. He then went on to have six more kids with Marcia, his first wife. When Christopher found out he became infuriated to the point where he thought his life had been a lie, but Christopher decided to keep his discovery to himself. .
Christopher's goal was to be the opposite of what his family was. Throughout his life, McCandless demonstrated extreme characteristics pertaining consumption. During high school, he "didn't understand how people could possibly be allowed to go hungry." Krakauer (113) At a young age, he could passionately talk about things concerning hunger for hours. Perhaps McCandless was so moved by the sudden topic of hunger in the world that he couldn't let the topic go. On one night, he decided to go with his fellow cross-country teammate, Eric Hathaway, and give hamburgers to homeless people in a bad part of town. McCandless wanted to help those at the bottom of the food consumption ladder. During McCandless's last semester at Emory University, he took a course regarding "Contemporary African Politics and the Food Crisis in Africa." Krakauer (21) After graduating, McCandless donated his remaining life savings to Oxford Committee for Famine Relief American (OXFAM.) Throughout his journey, he "never left any food on his plate." Krakauer (63) He never wasted anything, knowing the existence of starving people everywhere. .
McCandless exhibited sheer traits displaying his opinion of necessity. During McCandless's time at Emory University, he lived in a monkish room furnished with little more than a thin mattress on the floor, milk crates, and a table. After he graduates, he flatly dismisses his parents' offer to a new car, claiming that the Datsun runs perfectly fine. He uses his Datsun until he can't anymore. He abandoned his yellow Datsun after a flash flood temporarily disabled the car because he didn't want to deal with the police and "considered it his moral responsibility to flout the laws of the state.
