In the world of fashion, the consumers are the feedback of how successful the industry is. Through a personal survey given to five various individuals, the feedback resulted in a lack of knowledge of current trends. However, the participants did take an understanding that clothing does affect emotions and our impressions of others. Every participant believed that personalities affects how one dresses and behaves based on a certain style of fashion. Although most of the participants found themselves lacking the fashion trends of today, they believed their wardrobes reflected their own personalities and emotions. Most take pride in how they look and are particular about their clothing but find themselves looking for comfort rather than fashionability. Overall, most individuals would rather prefer comfort and "close to home" than trendy and fashionable (Source 10).
Our fashion interests come from our own personalities and how we feel about ourselves on a given day. Our personalities are developed from our brains throughout our lifetime. The psychological process of our personalities is performed throughout Freud's Stages of Psychosexual Development. The theory of psychosexual development was proposed by the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and described how personality developed over the course of childhood. Personality development begins as a large role in early experiences in life and continues to influence our behavior later on in life. If any errors occur during the developing process, a fixation can occur. A fixation is a persistent focus on an earlier psychosexual stage. Fixations can cause psychological problems in the future with one's personality traits. For example, someone who is fixated on constant oral use during the oral stage may be cause over-dependency and make seek oral stimulation later on in life through smoking, drinking, or excessive eating habits. .
The oral stage and anal stage are stages of Freud's stages of pyscho-sexual development, however, the most important stage that mostly relates to fashion and identification in characteristics and personality is the phallic stage.
