A great number of children today are going online and engaging in activities that are very dangerous and risky, such as viewing explicit content and being vulnerable to predators that use the Internet to target them. There are ways to go about protecting children from the great dangers in cyber world.
The Horrors of the Internet: The Dangers and the Protection of Children.
The history of the Internet started with the invention of electronic computers in the 1950's. The invention of radios, telephones, and telegraphs were all part of the start of technology. The first recorded description of the social interactions that could be enabled through networking was a series of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider in August 1962 discussing his "Galactic Network" idea. He went on to create an interconnected set of computers through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site. Author and Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Information Technology at the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, D.C, Gregory S. Smith (2007), defines the Internet as a collection of millions of computers around the world that are interconnected via wires, wireless, and sometimes satellite connections using computer protocols, networking devices, security appliances, and Internet providers enabling businesses and individuals to access and share information (pg. 4). In today's world, it's hard to go anywhere and do anything without using the Internet or some sort of technology (Smith, 2007). The Internet is very useful in today's society, but it has become a "prey playground" for online predators and hackers and people must know how to protect themselves as well as others, especially children.
The dangers of social networking have overrun networking sites in a big way.
