The Songs of Our Lives


In 1969 Led Zeppelin released their first record which changed rock and roll forever. The lyrics were intense, sexy and real. Heavily drug and sex influenced rock, was hard and heavy to the culture. These three genres were the biggest of the 60's and had the biggest influence because the lyrics were new fresh and thoughtful and the band members were not just musicians but speakers of political commentary and current events. .
             The genres of the 90's were grunge, hip hop, and alternative. Creating the generation of anger. In the 1990's when Nirvana released their second record "Nevermind", they broke with the song Smells Like Teen Spirit and changed everything. The grunge movement was the movement of anger, rage and distortion. Kurt Cobain was the true leader of this movement and made a generation of kids who were able to finally find a way to express their angst, through this music. .
             Hip hop and rap were birthed in the 90's by groups and people like the Wu Tang Clan, Biggie smalls, Tupac, and snoop dogg. Along with Female rappers like Queen Latifa and SaIt-N-Pepa. This was one of the first genres since the sixties to be speaking out for black rights and against black stereotypes. Hip Hop not only impacted blacks but whites as well because once white people discovered a primarily black genre they started listening and becoming endured by it and further supported the pro-black movement. .
             The Alternative Movement in the 90's, Blink-182 and Green Day, broke, giving a genre not as strong as grunge or rock, but not pop. Popular among kids, the lyrics were anti drug and anti authority. The Alternative, Grunge, And Hip Hop movement together formed the 90's movement which was a display of what artists truly felt about their lives and what was going on with them. .
             In the 1960's the movement that was impacted most heavily and impacted music the most was the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was primarily "The national effort made by black people and their supporters in the 1950s and 1960s to eliminate segregation and gain equal rights".
