The History of Prostitution


The United Kingdom was further scrutinized when they passed the Contagious Diseases Acts. With the help of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, prostitution was made illegal in the United States. In more recent years, many states in the United States increased the penalties for prostitution in such cases where the prostitute is knowingly HIV-positive, and could potentially be passing it along. Accordingly, the penalty for felony prostitution vary, with maximum sentences of 10 to 15 years in prison. .
             There are a few different types of prostitution. Amongst them include "call girls" and escorts that work for the higher paying clientele. Most escorts are self-employed, which means they benefit nicely from their profit. It is likely that an escort will work in hotels and private settings. Their advertisements are commonly seen on online so that they stay "concealed". Although they share some similarities with independent escorts -like, working in private locations and their prices being on the higher end- there are some girls who work for agencies. The only real difference between the two is that the latter has to give a cut of their earnings to their agencies. Another type of prostitute is the "in-house" workers, mainly in parlors or brothels. Brothels normally include saunas and massage parlors, but are still used for sex. Like escorts, the employees at a brothel must give a portion of their earnings to the brothel owner. Although not common in the United States, there are still window workers. This form of prostitution is prevalent in Amsterdam. The job of the ladies to entice spectators by simply sitting in the window, then they have sex all for little pay. Another uncommon type of prostitution is bar and casino workers, which is prevalent in Thailand and the Philippines. The prostitutes pick up men in the bar and/ or casino. The men usually pay a fee at the bar to spend a few days with the prostitutes.
