The Politics of Democracy

" (Mints-Close-Osvaldo,264). These large countries are able to reap the benefits of being under liberal democracy. Liberal democracy is a political system which is based on the ideas that the power of the government should be limited and that the government should observe the rule of law and that the rights of the people are protected. (Mints-Close-Osvaldo, 264). Some people also believe that Liberal democracy should be pluralist. This means that there would be many competitors for power that would bring upon a civil society. (Mints-Close- Osvaldo,264). This means that all the citizens are free to discuss organize and also act freely. (Mints-Close-Osvaldo,264).
There are many good aspects that liberal democracy is able to demonstrate. There are many key components such as the fact that many different cultural and religious groups are "not prohibited (legally or in practice) from expressing their interests in the political process or from speaking their language or practice their culture." (Diamond, 11) Here one may see that liberal democracy brings no discrimination. Liberal democracy would be greatly needed for countries, cities, or provinces around the world that possess many people from many different backgrounds all around the world such as Montreal fro example. Under liberal democracy many individuals, " have substantial freedom of belief, opinion, discussion, speech, publication, assembly, demonstration, and petition." (Diamond, 11). Liberal democracy gives many of freedoms to the people, which is a very good strategy to get many people on their side. Lastly of the examples as to why liberal democracy is a good form of government, is because "Individual and group liberties are effectively protected by an independent, nondiscriminatory judiciary, whose decisions are enforced and respected by other centers of power."(Diamond, 12). With all of these conditions that are applied by the power of liberal democracy there is only one conclusion, "If political authority is to be constrained and balanced, individual and minority rights protected, and a rule of law assured, democracy requires a constitution that is supreme.
