The Rwanda Genocide

Belgium considered the Tutsis to be superior to the Hutus. The Tutsis welcomed this idea because it allowed them to have better jobs and educational opportunities ("Rwandan Genocide: 100 Day Slaughter"). Rwanda was granted their independence by Belgium in 1962 ("Rwandan Genocide: 100 Day Slaughter"). Immediately after being colonized the Hutus showed their hatred towards the Tutsis, and the slaughter began. BBC news states that the, "Organized gangs of government soldiers and militias hacked their way through the Tutsi population with machetes, or blew them up in churches where they had taken refuge" ("Rwandan Genocide: 100 Day Slaughter"). Hutus were savages when it came to slaughtering the Tutsis. There were mass murders committed by the Hutus, and this lead to the formation of a rebel group created by the Tutsis called the Rwandan Patriotic Front ("Rwandan Genocide: 100 Day Slaughter"). The former government then forced the Hutus to go out and fight back against the Tutsis. If a Hutu refused to kill a Tutsi then they too would be killed. Only a few Tutsis survived, and those who did were kept as sex slaves, subjected to rape, and are now HIV positive ("Rwanda Genocide: 100 Day Slaughter"). .
Angellque Mukamanzi is living proof of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, and she has spoken out about her unthinkable experience. Mukamanzi gives her testimony about the days she suffered during the massive slaughter. She mentions the mornings when she would hear the Hutus announce their arrival by shouting songs of hatred and loud whistles. She described herself having to cover up in mud and lay in the swampy grass till the nighttime. It was at night when Mukamanzi was able to gather filthy raw food for her and family to eat. After eating Mukamanzi and her family would lie back down and talk the night away, wondering when it'd be their turn to die.
