Creating A Resilient Organization

Creating a Resilient Organization - by Peggy Doe.
I found the article "Creating a Resilient Organization", by Peggy Doe to be very informative. I never really thought about all the emotional stress downsizing could cause, but after reading this article I realized how devastating the event could actually be. I had just assumed the only people to be affected by downsizing would be the ones who were laid off or "let go", but during this period everyone is involved and are at a state of unease to such a change. This is why "90 percent of change initiatives that fail do so because the human factors were not taken into account"(p.200). I agree a well thought out plan must be made when attempting to downsize, to ensure the organization survives. I liked the juggling example used to show managers how employees feel when encountered with a new job responsibility. Some employees are open to learning new things, but most are reluctant because they are so used to their routine nine-to-five job. I firmly agree that employees need to be guided by their superior co-workers and managers through these rough times, as it is essential in keeping a business together. Employees must be taught that everyone is in the same situation, and that they must work together to ensure a positive outcome. Finally, I agree that employees should be rewarded when they exhibit new behaviours, as it gives people an incentive to make the best of a highly emotional experience. .
